With the kids gone the spatial needs changed from multiple bedrooms to a larger family room for visiting families. Part of an "abandoned" bedroom contributed space to the family room foot print, while the remainder of the space became a pantry, a coat closet, and a linen room. The "abandoned" bathroom became a powder room and the former shower became an outdoor covered space for the barbecue. Moving the refrigerator to the opposite wall visually opened the kitchen to the family room. A new family room roof allowed taller ceilings than the rest of the house and a small bump-out provided space for a large glazed area with double French doors to the beautiful garden.
